I had one foot in this world. A pal named Jim worked at the local yob clothing store selling Crombie coats and Harrington jackets to neighborhood lads. I had my posse of straight friends. On Saturday nights we would wear our Sta-prest pants, Ben Shermans and Fred Perrys, and head to the “Rank,” where I would chat to all the girls about how great their new missy separates looked and pray to god that nobody would figure out that I was as queer as a three-pound note.
The other foot was placed in a more daring location. While working at John Lewis, I was living a double life. Merkel's challenger pledges
Chancellor Angela Merkel's center-left challenger is
pledging quick policy changes if elected next month, promising Thursday to
introduce swiftly a national minimum wage and raise taxes for top earners as he
seeks to reverse a daunting poll deficit.
Recent surveys have given the popular Merkel's conservative bloc a lead of up to 19 percentage points over Peer Steinbrueck's Social Democrats and suggested that her current center-right coalition can hope to win re-election on Sept. 22.
But Steinbrueck insisted that "absolutely nothing is decided," arguing that many voters are undecided and there are millions of former supporters his party can reach out to.

Steinbrueck also is pledging to scrap a much-criticized new benefit for parents who choose to stay at home and invest the money in day-care facilities, increase pensions for the low-paid and drop rules forcing many children of immigrants to choose between German citizenship and that of their parents.
While Steinbrueck's 100-day agenda is largely domestic, it includes a pledge to press ahead with a European banking union - a key step to restoring confidence in Europe's financial system.
Specifically, he wants progress on setting up a central authority to wind up failing European banks - something Merkel's government insists would require time-consuming changes to European treaties. Steinbrueck charged that Merkel's government "is filibustering and delaying."

"I did it because of her," Russell said. "Jerusha is young and smart and definitely has her own voice, which I appreciate. She has a real sense of style, and she is great to work with. I'm really curious to see what she does next."
Reached by phone, Hess said she never flinched when she found out Russell was pregnant.
"Early on, I, like a lot of writers, put their dream cast on a board, and I had Keri stationed there, and I had given her a rough draft about a year before and she said yes," Hess said. "When we were finally ready to cast, we called her up and she said she was pregnant. She said, 'Can we work around this?'
"To her credit, she's like a tiny human pregnant fembot, so we shot really important scenes from the beginning. She was really confident that she could do it, so I bought into her confidence."

“Actually cool theater” may be the most concise way to label the work of Messrs. Cullman and Timbers. Mr. Cullman had two hit shows running this year: the bawdy “Murder Ballad” and the soul-stirring “Choir Boy.” Mr. Timbers’s production of “Peter and the Starcatcher” swept the Tonys in 2012 and continues to run off-Broadway. “Here Lies Love,a reliable company of Wholesale Womens Quinceanera Dresses,” the David Byrne disco musical Mr. Timbers directed, is being courted by producers for a commercial transfer.

In that unembellished atmosphere, what remained was the purity of tone in the young men’s singing, the immense beauty and sorrow therein.
