Abstract oil paintings is an easy gateway to the world of oil paintings for a budding artist. In abstract art, the novice artist does not have to paint anything complicated. The Abstract Art of Expression
Often we forget what the term Abstract Oil Paintings really means, what it refers to. There is a strong tendency to generalize the meaning of art and many feel that art simply equates to a pretty picture and for most of us that’s the extent of it. Or, on the other hand, if an artist is adept at faithfully copying an image from nature, he is considered an artist.
But, the real artist, creating realart, identifies a core attribute or characteristic of a scene or the message they wish to convey and presents that to the viewer. This is the process of abstraction. This is true for all great art, from the cave paintings of Lascaux to the Byzantine era, from Rembrandt to da Vinci, from Bourguereau to Monet, from Constable to Warhol.
Art is not simply a pretty picture, nor is it skillfully painting what we see, but rather a creative communication of feelings and emotions unachievable by documents of fact nor by a faithful reproduction. I strongly contend that art is the means by which we communicate emotion and feeling, in contrast to the cold hard facts.
In some art circles today, abstract art has become like a four-letter word, some even calling it a conspiracy. But one must realize that even with figurative and landscape art, the most profound and moving works are such because of the creativity of the artist, involving either artistic use of color, brushwork, edges are the masterful use of tone.
So in my assessment, the spirit of Abstract Expressionism is alive and well. Furthermore, I believe Abstract Expressionism to be the purest form of visual art in that the core directive of Abstract Expressionism is mirrored by the primary definition of art itself. Art is creative expression and the most effective method of expressing emotion is by the process of abstraction. Cold hard realism simply will not do.

The formation process of Richter's paintings
Abstract Oil Paintings 1997 is again a larger scale work and the gouged, scraped or peeled off marks are also in larger scale. As with Wald 3 versus the smaller abstract works, Abstract Painting shows how Richter’s technique is not made any less effective by increased scale. His techniques are tried, tested and versatile.
One of the most fascinating aspects of curating a show is learning more about how works are made - and curators at Tate are privileged to work alongside an amazing team of conservators. I have been talking with Rachel Barker, a painting conservator, about three of the ‘squeegee’ abstractions in the central room in the Richter show.
So, after the under-painting is determined ready Richter then covers it with thick oil paint, sometimes using wide headed brushes but more frequently with his squeegee. The squeegee usually comprises a length of flexible Perspex fitted with a wooden handle. The edge of the Perspex is used to etch, scrap or smear the paint across the surface of the work. In the film showing Richter painting we also see the artist distributing oil paint along the length of the squeegee and then applying it to the surface.
Richter’s assistants prepare his oil paint. The paint is purchased in huge cans. It is then strained through sections of muslin in order to further refine it, that is, de-clump it from pigment agglomerations. Multiple layers of paint are applied on top of the initial under-painting. As Richter often contemplates his under-painting for sometime it can be assumed that this paint layer is superficially dry by the time it comes to the ‘squeegee’ stage. Richter may also be using his knowledge of the different drying rates of different colours of oil paint to manipulate the drying characteristics of each layer of his painting.
